Mumuso vs Miniso: What’s the Difference? (And Why Mumuso Came to PEI First)

If you’ve shopped in any major Canadian city in the last decade, you’ve probably seen Miniso. The bright red logo, the wall-to-wall accessories, the under-$20 everything. So when Mumuso opened in Summerside, PEI in 2026 — the very first store of its kind in Atlantic Canada — the most common question we got was simple:

“Wait — is Mumuso the same as Miniso?”

The short answer: no, they are two completely separate companies. The longer answer is more interesting — and worth knowing if you live anywhere east of Quebec, because right now, Mumuso is the only brand of this kind anywhere in PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland or Labrador. Here’s everything you need to know.

A quick visual comparison

  • Miniso — Japanese-inspired aesthetic, red-and-white branding, founded in 2013, headquartered in Guangzhou, China. Public on the NYSE.
  • Mumuso — Korean-inspired aesthetic, soft-teal branding, founded in 2014, also based in China but separate ownership. Operates in 60+ countries.

They’re often confused because both are international “lifestyle variety stores” — large-format shops where you can buy a sheet mask, a charging cable and a coffee mug under one roof, and almost everything is between $3 and $30. But that’s where the similarity really ends.

Brand personality & design language

Miniso leans into a bright, playful, character-licensed style — the brand has long-running collaborations with names like Sanrio, Disney, and Marvel. Step into a Miniso and you’ll see Mickey, Hello Kitty and Stitch on a lot of the front-of-store fixtures.

Mumuso leans more into a calm, minimal, K-beauty-influenced look. Soft greens and creams, clean typography, “everyday wellbeing” as the throughline. If Miniso is the energetic younger cousin, Mumuso is the one who buys you a candle and tells you to take a breath.

What you’ll actually find in each store

The product categories overlap, but the emphasis is different.

  • Miniso strengths: licensed plush, accessories, snacks, costume jewellery, statement gadgets.
  • Mumuso strengths: Korean skincare & sheet masks, makeup brushes, hometextile (cushions, throws, slippers), stationery, calming home fragrance.

If you want a Hello Kitty plush keychain, Miniso. If you want a five-step skincare routine for under $40, Mumuso.

Pricing

Both brands target the same affordable-everyday price point. In Canadian dollars, the bulk of merchandise at both stores sits between $3 and $30, with most items closer to $10. You’re not going to find a meaningful price difference between an equivalent product at the two stores. The difference is almost entirely about which products are stocked.

Where to find each in Atlantic Canada

Here’s the part that surprises a lot of people:

  • Miniso has expanded heavily across Ontario, Quebec, BC and Alberta — but as of 2026, has no permanent retail location anywhere in Atlantic Canada. Closest stores are in Quebec.
  • Mumuso opened its first Atlantic Canadian store in 2026 in Summerside, PEI, at County Fair Mall, 475 Granville St. That makes it the only “lifestyle variety store” of its kind in PEI, NS, NB, NL — full stop.

If you’ve ever flown back from Toronto with a suitcase of Miniso goodies for your nieces and nephews, you’ll be glad to hear you don’t have to anymore — you can drive 45 minutes from Charlottetown and find an even bigger range at Mumuso.

So… is Mumuso “as good as” Miniso?

It’s a fair question. Both brands run their own quality control, both source from a wide network of factories, and both are competitive on price. We’re not going to pretend Mumuso is “better than” Miniso in some absolute sense — they serve slightly different shoppers. But for an Atlantic Canadian audience right now, Mumuso is the only one of its kind and it leans into the categories — beauty, hometextile, soft minimal stationery — that we hear customers asking for most.

Why we chose PEI first

Mumuso’s Atlantic Canadian launch is operated by Frasora Lifestyle Inc., a Canadian-registered retail company headquartered right here in Summerside. We could have launched in Halifax or Moncton — and probably will eventually — but Summerside is home, the County Fair Mall location is genuinely fantastic, and PEI’s tourism economy means we get to introduce the brand to about a million-and-a-half visitors every summer in addition to our amazing year-round Islander community.
